The Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team certainly didn't make it easy on themselves, but they did manage to pick up their first win of 2015-16 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers twice fought back, down 1-0 and 2-1, and pulled out a thrilling 17-15 win in the fifth set to claim the match victory.
The team had shown glimpses throughout the season of being able to breakthrough and pick up their first win of the season, but it always seemed to slip away and they came up short until they faced the Badgers.
The Lakers stumbled out of the gates, losing 25-16 to kick off the match, but quickly responded with a 25-20 win to even things up.
The Badgers grabbed the momentum back in the third set with a narrow 26-24 victory to put Nipissing on their heels, but the Lakers showed heart by fighting back to take the fourth set 25-18 to tie the match once again and send things to a fifth and deciding set.
In the final set, it took some extra time, but Nipissing came away with a 17-15 win and a 3-2 triumph in the match.
Offensively, the Lakers had a balanced attack with
Tracy Hammerton picking up a team-leading 10 kills, while
Erika Lapierre and
Annabelle Harvey chipped in with eight kills and
Taylor Ley added seven.
The four – two middles and two outside hitters – combined for 48.5 points and pushed Nipissing to victory.
Lakers setter
Jade DeCoste, battling an injury, was very good picking up 35 assists and allowing the team to score efficiently.
Nipissing will now look to make it a perfect weekend when they remain on the road and take on the York Lions Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
