With the opportunity to pick up a weekend sweep on the road, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball was well on their way to back-to-back wins.
Despite trailing in both of the first two sets, the Lakers were victorious, going up 2-0 in the match, but the York Lions, who escaped North Bay with a win a few weekends ago, fought back to win three straight sets and take the match 3-2 to spoil what could have been a perfect weekend for Nipissing.
A well-balanced offence, much like Saturday's win, saw things get off to a strong start for the Lakers with a 25-22 victory in the first set.
They built on that win, picking up a 28-26 win in the second set, fighting back on multiple occasions to claim the wins.
In the third and fourth sets, however, the Lions picked up their game and closed the gap winning set three 25-23 before evening up the match thanks to a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
The teams, tied up, entered the fifth set, both looking to finish the first half of the season on a high note.
It was the Lions who jumped out to an early lead, up 4-0 before the Lakers called a timeout.
Nipissing fought back to cut the lead to 7-5 and evened up the fifth set at 9-9. From there, the Lions held a slight lead the rest of the way, including a 12-10 lead, as they picked up the 15-11 win to secure the 3-2 match victory.
Erika Lapierre had a big game with 19 kills,
Tracy Hammerton picked up 16 and
Christina Caruso earned 12 kills for Nipissing.
Jade DeCoste, playing banged up, grabbed another 49 assists for Nipissing.
Jessica Klassen had a game-high 32 digs along with two assists.
The Lakes are now done for the semester and will hit the court again in 2016.
