The Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team came up short of the playoffs last year and they're not prepared to let that happen again.
The Lakers will hit the road for a pair of games this weekend, hoping to get off to a good start and set the tone of the 2015 campaign.
Despite losing a few players to graduation, the Lakers have recruited well, trained hard and are now ready to get things going tomorrow when they take on the UOIT Ridgebacks and Sunday when they face the Trent Excalibur.
Last season, the Lakers got off to a very good start, winning their first game and going 1-1-1 through their first three and they're looking to at least match that, but are aiming high.
With four straight road games to being the season, their effort and results will set the tone for the whole season.
The Lakers dropped both games to UOIT last year, losing 1-0 in North Bay and 4-0 in Oshawa, while they defeated Trent both times the teams hit the pitch, winning 5-2 at home and coming out on top by a final of 3-0 in Peterborough.
The Lakers are returning three of their top four scorers, and will rely on a balanced attack to be successful.
Second-year forward
Kristen Farkas, who led the team in goals last season, is back once again, as well as
Rachel Haine,
Shannon Russell and
Vanessa Rota, who all found the back of the net a number of times.
In goal, the Lakers possess a strong duo of returnees, with both
Kelly Dunk and
Carlee Bennard back in the mix, while adding
Hana Gazdik to the fold.
Defensively,
Selena Innamorati,
Delaney Borsato,
Katie Koenjer, along with newcomer
Andrea Dermott and the return of
Renee Clarke make the Lakers back line a strong and confident group.
On paper the Lakers look like a team that can do some damage and now it's just a matter of time until they prove on the field.
The Lakers hit the field tomorrow against UOIT at noon and Sunday versus Trent.
