The game was circled on the calendar for both teams and the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team and Laurentian Voyageurs didn't disappoint.
In likely the most intense game of the season, both teams left it all out on the field and it was just a single goal that decided the game, as Laurentian snuck away with the three points.
A fourth minute header proved to be enough by the Vees, as they claimed the third leg of the Riley Gallo Cup with a 1-0 win over the Lakers.
Nipissing peppered the Vees net, firing 17 shots towards goal, but were unable to find pot one.
Nicholas Cirullo finished with five saves, with just the one shot getting by him.
Neil Van De Walle and
Nathan Zak led the Nipissing attack, combining for seven shots.
The Lakers played one of their better games of the year and put in the effort, but weren't rewarded and they fall to 1-7-1 on the season, with a game Sunday in Toronto against the Varsity Blues.
Following Sunday's game, there are six left on the schedule and while they still are only six points out of a playoff position, time is running out for them to make their run towards the post-season.
Sunday's game begins three straight on the road, before Nipissing finishes the season off with four home games in a row.
Nipissing will look to bounce back against the third place Varsity Blues, who have lost just once so far this season and topped the Lakers 5-0 in both team's season opener.
Game time is 2:15pm at Varsity Stadium in Toronto Sunday afternoon.
