Slow starts have been an issue for the Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team of late and even though they trailed early, their improved start lead them to a key win.
Trailing 2-1, Nipissing took a 3-2 lead and never looked back, on their way to a 14-11 victory over the visiting Carleton Ravens.
The Lakers were down 1-0 and 2-1, grabbed a 3-2 lead and never looked back, despite a push back from Carleton that saw them tie the game in the second quarter.
Nick Chaykowsky continued his impressive season, scoring six goals and adding an assist, while
Doug Utting chipped in with four goals and an assist.
Scott Dominey had five points,
Alex DeGagne had two, while
Andrew Young,
Tyler Goodchild and
Riley Sloan all scored a goal apiece.
After leading 5-3 through the first quarter and 8-6 at halftime, the Lakers built up a 12-7 advantage after three quarters, and held on in the fourth.
Carleton attempted a comeback in the final quarter, outscoring Nipissing 4-2, but it wasn't enough as the Lakers held on for their third win of the season.
Nipissing sits in sixth place in the East Division, just two points out of third entering the final few weekends of the 2016 CUFLA season.
The Lakers are currently the second highest scoring team in the East, with 91 goals, but have struggled a bit to keep the ball out of their own net.
The Lakers will face Ottawa this weekend and Bishops twice the following weekend to close out the season.
With a couple of wins, Nipissing can jump both teams and find themselves near the top of the standings, despite a slow start to the year.
Two of the Lakers wins this season have come against Carleton and the team will be looking for a bit of a revenge against Ottawa, who slipped past the Lakers 11-9 in our Nation's Capital at the end of September.
The final home game of the regular season for the Lakers is Friday night at 5pm at Veterans Field versus Ottawa.
