Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team.
Hitting the road for the first time after two tough losses on home ice, the Lakers picked up their first victory of the season Friday night – an exciting 4-3 double overtime win over the Queens Gaels.
And despite a late game comeback, as Nipissing scored three straight goals to tie the game, the Lakers fell 4-3 in double overtime to the undefeated UOIT Ridgebacks.
Jimmy McDowell was first star, scoring three goals including the game winner on a breakaway in the second overtime period.
Adam Clements, who scored his first OUA goal, added the other marker for Nipissing.
The Lakers led most of the way, scoring first – Clements marker – before the Gaels tied it late in the first period.
McDowell scored two of his three goals in the second period to give Nipissing a 3-1 advantage heading into the final period.
In the third, the Gaels scored twice to tie the game and send it to an extra frame.
After a scoreless first overtime, McDowell ended the game going five-hole on Kevin Bailie to give Nipissing the win and two points.
Erik Robichaud and
Brock Morrison each picked up two assists in the victory, while
Jeremy Pominville made 32 saves to earn the victory.
On Saturday afternoon, it was the reverse story.
The Lakers trailed from the get-go and found themselves down 3-0 at one point before scoring three times in the third period to send the game to overtime, guaranteeing points in both road contests.
Robichaud,
Deverick Ottereyes and
Colin Campbell all found the back of the net, while
Sam Gleason had two helpers and Morrison added another.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Ridgebacks came away with the extra point thanks to Conor Jarvis' game-winner.
Pominville finished with 37 saves in a losing cause.
The Lakers are back in action Friday when they travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee Gees.
They return home for Pink The Rink Saturday against Queens.
