WOMEN'S SOCCER: LAKERS HAND GEE GEES THEIR FIRST LOSS

Brian Doherty Photo
When they needed a win the most, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team came up huge.

With just four games left on the schedule and needing at least three wins to give themselves a shot at the post-season, the Lakers put in maybe their most complete effort Saturday afternoon, picking up one of the bigger upsets of the season.

The Lakers beat the previously undefeated Ottawa Gee Gees 2-1, thanks to a late goal by Kristen Farkas and an overall great effort.

Farkas scored in the 89th minute to give Nipissing the lead and they held on in the final seconds to grab the much-needed three points.

While there weren't many scoring chances through the early part of the game, both teams showed their skill and speed.

It took almost the full 45 minutes of the first half before a goal was scored, as Delaney Borsato found the back of the net on a penalty kick.

With the goal, the Lakers led at the halftime break.

Less than 20 minutes into the second half, the Gee Gees tied the game after a forward broke in alone on Carlee Bennard and got a shot past the veteran goalkeeper.

With the score 1-1 and both teams seemingly on their way to a draw, the Lakers pushed late and Farkas fired the game-winner home with just minutes left on the clock.

The win, Nipissing's fourth of the season, moves them just five points behind Toronto for the final playoff spot, but the Lakers have a game in hand, which they'll use tomorrow against Carleton.

Bennard wasn't overly busy, but finish with 10 saves for her third win of the season.

The Lakers are back in action at Noon Sunday, when they face the Carleton Ravens in another must-win for the team.
