WOMEN'S SOCCER: LAKERS BATTLE TO EARN A POINT VERSUS RAVENS

Brian Doherty Photo
Even though all the goals were scored in the first half, there was no shortage of drama and excitement between the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team and the visiting Carleton Ravens.

Coming off a huge win Saturday over Ottawa, the Lakers were looking for another positive result Sunday afternoon and got that in the form of a 2-2 draw.

The Lakers twice erased one goal deficits to earn the valuable point as they attempt a late push for the post-season.

After Carleton scored just two minutes into the game the Lakers answered moments before the halftime whistle.

Renee Clarke blasted home a goal at the 39-minute mark to draw the teams even.

It would take the Ravens just four minutes to regain the lead, as they looked to close out the half with the advantage.

The Lakers and veteran Shannon Russell had other plans, however.

Russell headed home a great cross by Clarke, for one of the prettiest goals of the season, and tied the game a minute after the Ravens scored.

With the team seven at two after 45 minutes, both pushed in the second half for the winner.

The teams combined for 15 shots in the second, but none would find the back of the net as the Lakers settled for the 1-1 tie and a single point.

Despite the lack of goal scoring the final 45 minutes, both teams seemed to kick their game into playoff mode, with every ball hotly contested.

Three yellow cards, all to Carleton, were handed out in the final 15 minutes of the game as the physicality picked up as well.

Carlee Bennard didn't avoid the physical contact and finished with an impressive 14 saves, many tough ones with traffic around the goal area.

The Lakers will wrap up the regular season next weekend at home against Queens and RMC, as they try to track down Toronto for the final playoff position in the East Division.
