There can only be one.
And it is the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team, as they are now the only undefeated team in the OUA thanks to a 2-0 shutout victory over the visiting Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gardens.
The Lakers used goals in the first and second period, some great forechecking and an outstanding effort in net from
Jackie Rochefort to earn their fourth win of the season and hand Western their first loss of 2016-17.
Nipissing scored in the first period, as
Taylor Murphy snapped home a shot that clipped the crossbar and dropped straight down into the net.
The goal would turn out to be the game-winner and was Murphy's first of the season during her two games.
Linemates
Brooklyn Irwin and
Kaley Tienhaara picked up assists on the goal.
Nipissing would find the back of the net once again in the second period, as
Bronwyn Bolduc continued her hot start, scoring her league-leading fourth goal of the season.
Like Murphy's goal, Bolduc's two linemates drew assists on the goal.
Kaitlyn McManus did a great job of getting the puck up to
Sam Strassburger, who took the Western defender wide and saucered a perfect pass to Bolduc who redirected the puck into the back of the net.
From there, it was all Rochefort.
She made 27 saves in total for her first shutout of the year to propel the Lakers to a 4-0-0 start.
Nipissing has been perfect through four games, winning twice on the road last weekend and twice at home this weekend and they will now hit the road for five straight games, before returning home November 18.
