The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team didn't waste any time getting back into the win column after suffering their first loss of the season.
After a tough 3-1 loss Saturday, the Lakers responded with a come-from-behind 3-2 overtime victory Sunday versus the York Lions to split the weekend.
Nipissing erased a two goal deficit and thanks to a
Stacey Henshaw goal in the extra period, came away with the win.
In the opening period, the Lions took the lead with a goal just past the midway point.
York extended their lead late in the second period and had the Lakers on the ropes, but a late goal by
Hunter Mosher – her first in the OUA – cut the lead in half and had the Lakers within a goal heading into the final period.
In the third,
Brooklyn Irwin tied the game with about five minutes left and sent the game to the extra frame.
In overtime, Henshaw won it for the Lakers.
Jetta Derenoski assisted on the opening goal,
Zosia Davis had two assists, while
Laura McKenzie and
Bronwyn Bolduc had the other helpers throughout the game.
Jackie Rochefort made 28 saves for her fifth win of the season.
Both teams fired 30 shots on goal during the 63-plus minute game.
The win was the Lakers last game of October, as they now begin play in November, where they'll hit the road for three games – next weekend in Laurier versus the Golden Hawks and Waterloo against the Warriors, before heading to Sudbury to face
Laurentian on Nov. 12.
Nipissing returns home Nov. 18 and 19 to face Guelph and Brock.
