MEN'S BASKETBALL: HUGE BOUNCE BACK GIVES LAKERS FIRST WIN

Brian Doherty Photo
It would have been easy for the Nipissing Lakers men's team to still be down and out from last night's heartbreaking loss, but instead, they rebounded in a big way.

The Lakers grabbed their first win of the season and for the first time in their short history, are at .500, thanks to a smothering 71-52 victory over the visiting Western Mustangs Saturday night.

The Lakers used a solid defensive outing and some strong shooting to pick up the win and even their record at 1-1 after the first weekend of play in the OUA.

Friday's game had a little more excitement to it, however, Saturday's game was far more controlled and the attention to detail the Lakers showed, aside from a few bumps, was much improved.

The Lakers played a consistent game, scoring at least 16 points per quarter, with two hitting 18 and capped out at 19 in the third, their biggest advantage.

After trailing by just a point following the first 10 minutes, Nipissing controlled the rest of the game, wining quarters two and three by a total of 37-20, giving them a big lead heading into the fourth.

In the fourth, they edged Western 16-13 to put the game away and by that point, the game was well in hand.

Despite not putting up a tonne of points in the final quarter, their defence upped its game and shut Western down to cruise to victory.

Nipissing had four players hit double digits, balancing their offensive out.

Justin Shaver put up his second straight double-double, scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Marcus Lewis scored and Jordon Campbell each scored 14 and Jaaden Lewis posted a career-high 13.

Nipissing will now hit the road for a pair of games, facing Ryerson and Toronto next weekend.
