MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS SUFFER FIRST LOSS, SPLIT THE WEEKEND

Brian Doherty Photo
It will be the first bit of serious adversity the Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball team will have faced so far this season.

The Lakers have battled injuries, but suffered their first loss, a 3-0 setback to the Toronto Varsity Blues on the road Saturday, ending their three game undefeated streak and perfect start to the season.

It was far from a bad loss, despite the sweep.

In the first set, the Lakers fell 27-25, the second was tight as well, as the Lakers came up on the wrong end of a 25-22 decision and Toronto sealed the win with a 25-20 victory in the third set.

The loss follows a convincing 3-0 win over the Ryerson Rams Friday night.

On Friday night, Steve Wood led the Lakers attack, putting up 14 kills and 15 points, Warren Taylor had seven kills and 11.5 points, while Cam Branch added seven kills and nine points in the win.

Saturday, Wood once again led the attack with 10 kills and 12.5 points.

He was joined by Warren Taylor who had eight kills and 12 points, while rookie Mason Blais put up five kills and 7.5 points in a losing cause.

Toronto led in the dig category and was able to keep a lot of plays alive with strong defensive play and even though the Lakers held their own in that category, the advantage did go Toronto's way.

That was, however, offset by Nipissing's strong play at the net, as they recorded 11 blocks to Toronto's three.

It was a sweep, but with the scores so close, the Lakers can't hang their heads about the loss.

They are now 3-1 heading into the bye week.

They'll return to the court at home on Nov. 26 and 27, hosting RMC then Queens to close out a quiet first semester.

In the second semester, they will really pick things up, playing most weekends and a total of 12 matches, compared to six in the first half of the year.

Their matches at home in a couple weeks will be at 2pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.
