The Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team did a great job of jumping back into the win column Saturday afternoon.
After putting a tough road trip behind them, the Lakers came out strong and came away with a 3-1 win over the RMC Paladins in to kick-off the final weekend of play in the first semester.
The win snapped a mini two-match losing streak and also got the Lakers back to .500, with a 3-3 record and one match left on the schedule.
The match began with a bang for the Lakers, who took the first set 25-9.
It was all Nipissing early, as they built up a 9-2 lead before RMC jumped back into the set.
With the score 13-8 Nipissing, they made it 18-8 and proceeded to outscore RMC 7-1 down the stretch to grab the opening set.
The second was similar, as the Lakers took control with the match tied 8-8.
From there, they went up 14-8, advanced to a 20-12 advantage and closed things out, winning 25-13 and going up 2-0 in the match.
RMC, as they always do, refused to give up and took home the third set, 25-20.
It was a toss-up who would take home the third set, as the teams were close until the end.
RMC held leads throughout the set and pulled away late in the set.
They extended the match, but only by a set, as Nipissing closed things out in the fourth with a 25-21 win.
It was the middle of the set that really opened things up for the Lakers, as they turned a 10-9 lead into a 17-9 lead, which gave them the advantage down the stretch.
They made no mistake in finishing things off and earned their third win of the season and second on home court.
Tracy Hammerton,
Shayla Kessler and
Erika Lapierre all had 13 kills and
Stephanie Armstrong was impressive, earning 38 assists.
The Lakers evened their record up at 3-3 with today's win and will face the Queen Gaels tomorrow at 12.
