For the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team, it was a great finish to the 2016 portion of the OUA schedule.
They were forced to settle for a weekend split on the road, but they were impressive Friday in earning their first win of the season and can build off solid efforts both nights.
Friday, the Lakers picked up a deserving victory, as they defeated the Waterloo Warriors 62-55 thanks to a big second quarter and a consistent effort through all 40 minutes of play.
Marla Corney had a huge game, scoring 20 points to lead the Lakers, while
Heidi Smith added 15 points and
Jamie Soffer chipped in with 10 as well.
The win came at a perfect time for the team, who has been struck with a series of injuries.
On Saturday, Nipissing was unable to repeat the heroics from a night before, as they fell 94-62 to the Laurier Golden Hawks.
Soffer had a big night, scoring 25 points and adding 10 rebounds in the loss, while
Claire Abbott put up 16 points to contribute to the Lakers offensive production.
The end of the weekend wasn't what they had planned, but overall, Nipissing closes out the season with a split and will now look to build off the success they found when they resume play in January.
They're back on the court hosting McMaster and Brock on Jan. 6 and 7.
Tip-off is set for 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre both nights.
