The plan was to finish strong and after a big win Friday night, the plan is working for the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team.
The Lakers made it back-to-back wins for the first time this season after taking care of the Guelph Gryphons in four sets at the RJS Athletic Centre.
In what was most likely the Lakers best game from start to finish in terms of execution, consistent and overall play, they came out strong and took a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The opening set was even for the majority, but Nipissing seemed comfortable with the pace and was in control for the most part.
They came away with a 25-22 win to grab the lead and play on their toes.
In the second, the story was similar, but it was a more dominant effort, as Nipissing built up a few different leads and eventually closed things out with a 25-16 triumph to grab a stranglehold of the match.
The Gryphons wouldn't back down, however, as they fought back in the fourth set and kept the match going with a gutsy 25-22 win to draw within one set.
Unlike last weekend, where the Lakers weren't able to close out Waterloo, Nipissing made no mistake this time, coming back late in the set and truly taking control once the scores hit 20.
Last weekend, it took five sets, but the Lakers did close things out in style – this time it was four – but it was the same story, as they wrapped up the match with a 25-22 victory.
Nipissing has three of its four wins in the 2016 portion of the season and has been playing much better lately.
With one more victory, which could come tomorrow, the Lakers would equal last year's total.
Tracy Hammerton had one of her best matches of the season, recording 23 kills.
And while Hammerton was the main weapon, they had a balanced attack as
Cassie Dobson added 10 kills, Erika Lapieere and
Annabelle Harvey chipped in with seven each and
Carley Uden was solid again, picking up 42 assists.
Christina Caruso continued her strong play on the defensive end, grabbing 20 more digs.
The Lakers will look to make it three in a row in their season finale when they host the McMaster Marauders Saturday night at 6 p.m.
