WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS FALL IN GAME 2, SERIES NOW TIED

Brian Doherty Photo
The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team had their second consecutive chance to earn a series sweep in the post-season, but facing the defending OUA/CIS champs, they were going to have to really earn it.

While they played a solid game and potted two power play goals, the Lakers came up short today on the road in Game 2, losing 4-2 to the Western Mustangs.

The 4-2 loss comes after a 4-2 Nipissing win in Game 1 Wednesday.

With the teams tied 1-1 in the series, the winner of Sunday's Game 3 will win the series, advance to the OUA championship game and qualify for CIS Nationals along with the Guelph Gryphons.

Stacey Henshaw scored twice on the power play for Nipissing, Zosia Davis had two assists, but it wasn't enough for the Lakers to earn the sweep.

Henshaw rifled home a power play marker in the first period to get the scoring started, but Western would reply with two goals of their own before the end of the opening frame.

Davis picked up the lone assist on Henshaw's first OUA playoff goal.

With the score 1-0 Nipissing, the Mustangs would reply quickly and grab a 2-1 lead before the end of the first period.

Down a goal, Henshaw would pot her second of the game to tie things up in the second period.

Davis picked up her second assists while Kaley Tienhaara earned the other helper.

Western would once again reply quickly, regaining the lead before the teams headed to the dressing room for the second intermission.

The Lakers would put on all kinds of pressure, including 14 shots, in the third period, but the lone goal came from Western into the empty-net to seal the victory and extend the series.

Overall, Nipissing outshot Western 28-21, as Lakers goalie Jackie Rochefort finished with 18 saves.

Now, the teams will play Game 3 Sunday at 4pm in London, with the winner advancing to the OUA Championship game against Guelph next Saturday.
