WOMEN'S SOCCER: LAKERS SHOW HEART, EARN A POINT SUNDAY

Brian Doherty Photo
The Nipissing Lakers managed to salvage the weekend and earn a valuable point on the road during a trip to Ottawa.

With a pair of games against two strong teams – the number one and three teams in the division – the Lakers came away with a loss and tie, dropping a tight game to Ottawa before grabbing a point versus Carleton.

Combined Ottawa and Carleton are 13-2-2, so for the Lakers to steal a point is a big accomplishment.

The weekend started with a 2-0 loss to Ottawa, who remains undefeated, but it wasn't for a lack of effort or hardwork.

Mykaela Volpe was the story of the game, making 17 saves to hold her team in it, but was tagged with the loss.

Ottawa scored in the sixth minute to go ahead and tacked on their second goal in the 48 th to seal the victory.

Nipissing managed six shots on goal, but was unable to convert.

On Sunday, the Lakers battled back to earn a single point, as they erased a 1-0 deficit against the powerful Ravens.

Brittany Burns scored the lone Lakers goal, her third of the season, to tie things up.

Nipissing will now turn their focus to the second part of the Riley Gallo Cup, as they host Laurentian Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers currently trail 2-0 in both the Riley Gallo Cup and the 705 Challenge Cup.

The women will hit the field second on Saturday, a change from their usual noon start.

Kick off will be 2:15pm, schedule to be played at the Education Centre Field, at Nipissing University.
