Just before Christmas, the Nipissing Lakers men's basketball team made program history, as they earned their first weekend sweep and first back-to-back wins on the road.
This weekend, they did it again.
The Lakers used great offence one night and stingy defence the night to pick up wins over the Queens Gaels Friday night and the York Lions Saturday, both away from the RJS Athletic Centre.
Friday, while they didn't blow them away, the Lakers did control the game for the most part and outscored the Gaels 93-84 to grab their sixth win of the season.
The key was a balanced offensive attack that saw six players hit double digits in the win -
Marcus Lewis 18, Addy Ogunye 15,
Jaaden Lewis 15,
Jordon Campbell 13,
Justin Shaver 12, Ismael Kaba 11.
Nipissing led 24-16 after the first and 46-36 at halftime.
The third quarter was a little more quiet offensively, but the teams then exploded for 63 points in the final quarter as the Gaels attempted the comeback.
Nipissing held on, however, claiming the nine point win.
Saturday, it was the defensive side and clutch shots that made the difference.
After trailing by by 13 after the first quarter, the Lakers responded in a big way, outscoring York 25-5 in the second, which gave them a 37-30 lead going into halftime.
In the third, York closed the gap by three, setting up an exciting fourth.
Despite being outscored by two, the Lakers did enough to hold on to the win, including some late game heroics by
Marvin Ngonadi who hit two free-throws with just seconds left to give Nipissing the victory.
Ismael Kaba led the way with 15 points,
Marcus Lewis had 12 and
Jaaden Lewis put up 10 earning the Lakers their third straight victory.
The Lakers are back on home court next weekend, hosting a pair of games.
