WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS CAN'T SECURE ROAD WINS

Everything improved for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team from Friday to Saturday night.

Offence was better, defence impressed, the score was closer, but the main thing, the final score, unfortunately still didn't go the Lakers way, as they lost a hearbreaker to the York Lions.

The Lakers let a lead slip away, as the Lions stormed back in the fourth quarter to earn a 68-64 victory, a night after the Lakers dropped a 96-46 decision to the Queens Gaels.

Friday, the Gaels were the better team start to finish and took advantage of some hot-shooting, outscoring the Lakers in all four quarters, including a big second quarter that really separated the teams.

The Gaels entered the game undefeated and remained that way at the expense of the Lakers, who have been making strides, but haven't been able to gain much traction in the standings.

Devanee Dewey led the Lakers with 18 points last night, while Heidi Smith put up 10 in the loss to Queens.

Saturday, in an exciting game, Nipissing and York went back and forth, basket for basket and despite leading at halftime and at the end of three, the Lakers were unable to hold on.

Down three after the first, the Lakers had a strong middle of the game, outscoring York 32-35 in the second and third quarters, which gave them 32-26 lead at halftime and a 46-42 after three quarters.

But York stepped up their game in the fourth and came flying back, outscoring Nipissing 26-18 to close the gap and take the lead, holding on in the end for the four point victory.

Michaela Branker and Heidi Smith each had 15 points, while Claire Abbott added 11 in the loss.

The Lakers are back on the court at home this weekend, hosting Lakehead and Guelph at the RJS Athletic Centre.
