LACROSSE: LAKERS POST A HUGE WEEKEND

After a few tough weeks, the Nipising Lakers lacrosse team is hoping this past weekend is the start of something big.

Nipissing opened up the season with a win, but had lost five straight after the initial win, but they got back on track this past weekend, defeating both Ottawa and Carleton to improve their record to 3-5.

A gutsy win Saturday and a huge statement win Sunday have the team feeling good going into a week off, before the final four games of the regular season.

Saturday
An impressive first quarter and strong first half led the Lakers team to a victory Saturday, ending their slide.

Nipissing opened the game up by grabbing a 6-2 lead and extended that to 11-5 at halftime and held on the second half as the Ottawa Gee Gees attempted to fight back.

The Lakers led 6-2 thanks to five different goal scorers after the opening frame and added to that in the second, with five more goals, which included a hat-trick by Scott Dominey who had a staggering nine goals in the game.

Up by six at the half, the Gee Gees attempted a comeback in the second, but Nipissing matched their intensity and would answer each goal with one of their own.

Ottawa did cut into the lead by one in the third quarter, but once again, the Lakers answered in the fourth and sealed the victory.

The win is Nipissing's second of the season and ends a five-game losing streak.

Dominey had a monster game, scoring nine times and added three assists.

Nick Chaykowsky had four goals and five assists, Tanner Poole had three goals and three assists, Riley Sloan had a pair of goals and Sam Rooney and Alex DeGagne each added singles.

Joseph McMahon was in net for the win.

Sunday
The Lakers made a statement Sunday afternoon, jumping out to a huge lead and cruising to their second straight victory and third of the year.

Nipissing scored nine straight goals to build up a commanding lead as they cruised to a lopsided 18-6 win over the visiting Carleton Ravens at Veteran's Field.

Still rolling after Saturday's win, the Lakers jumped to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter and a 9-3 advantage at halftime.

While they had a comfortable lead, they blew the game wide open in the third, scoring seven goals and leading 16-5 heading into the final period of play.

In the fourth, they locked things down and managed to find the back of the net twice more, locking up win number three on the season.

Dominey had another gigantic game, scoring 11 goals and adding an assist.

Poole had six more points, Chaykowsky added a goal and four assists, Tyler Goodchild had a goal and an assist and Bryan Kells and Riley Sloan each added a goal.

MacMahon picked up the win in net for the second straight day.

The Lakers are now have a week off before they host Trent for a pair of game on Oct. 14 and 15 at Veteran's Field.
