While the season as a whole hasn't gone the way the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team would have liked, they did come up with a big win Saturday afternoon ovr the Trent Excalibur.
In a feisty, physical and high-scoring game, the Lakers walked away with a 4-2 win after building up a 3-0 advantage and hanging on in the end.
Nathan Zak led the way with two goals in a game that had almost a playoff-like intensity and atmosphere to it.
Twenty minutes into the game,
Jonathan Mulimbi set the tone for the game by finding the back of the net and giving the Lakers the early lead.
The half would end with Nipissing up just a single goal.
From there,
Nathan Zak - set up by
Cody Vaillancourt - widened the lead to 2-0 35-minutes after Mulimbi's opening goal
Just three minutes after that,
Matt Anderson knocked home another Lakers goal, putting them up by three and in complete control.
Trent responded with goals seven minutes apart to cut the Lakers lead to just one, but after taking a perfect long distance pass from
Ryan Roy, Zak cleverly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 4-2.
The game would end with the Lakers holding on to their two goal lead and grabbing the full three points.
They will face the UOIT Ridgebacks to close out the season Sunday at 2:15pm.
Prior to the game, the Lakers will honour two graduating student-athletes.
