There was never any reason to panic, but the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team made sure they didn't fall to 0-2 early in the OUA season.
After a tough outing Friday night, the Lakers rebounded nicely, earning a dominating 5-0 victory over the Windsor Lancers Saturday afternoon on home ice.
Five different goals scorers found the back of the net and goalie
Danika Ranger earned her first win and shutout in the OUA, as she made 24 saves throught 60 minutes.
The Lakers scored in each period, with
Jade Gauthier scoring her team-leading third goal of the season, which ended up the game-winner, in the first period.
She roofed a perfect shot over the blocker hand of the Lancers goalie to make it 1-0, a goal assists by linemates
Robyn Degagne and
Maria Dominico.
Leading 1-0 in the second, Nipissing ballooned their lead to 3-0 thanks to a rebound goal by
Ava Keis, who tapped home a loose puck and a nice deflection by
Bronwyn Bolduc.
Molly Sipprell,
Brianna Gaffney and
Marilyn Fortin all drew assists on the two second period Lakers goals.
In the third and final period, Nipissing made sure the game was out of reach, tacking on two more goals.
Degagne picked up her first in a Lakers uniform and Dominico scored her second in as many games to make it five.
Ranger, made sure the offence didn't go to waste, as she was perfect in goal in her first start in the OUA.
The Lakers, now 1-1-0, will hit the road for a five games, beginning next weekend in Sudbury against Laurentian.
