Fans at the Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball home opener sat on the edges of their seats as the Nipissing Lakers battled point for point against the York Lions in their home opener.

Unfortunately, the Lakers came up short in the end, losing 3-1 to the Lions.

We spent the first set continuously trailing behind by a few points until the score reached 17-17 with a shot down the line. From here, the Lakers pulled ahead winning the first set 25-22. Entering the second set it was clear the outcome was unpredictable again.

The Lakers were trailing behind until a shot landing on the back line tied up the score at 22-22. Unfortunately this time the Lakers couldn't reach 25 points before the Lions, making the sets 1-1 as we headed into the third.

The men kept their energy high heading into the third set. Again, the match remained close, both teams fairly evenly matched.

Slowly the Lions began pulling ahead. The Lakers kept playing their best but, were unsuccessful in pulling ahead of York and lost the third set 25-18.

The fourth set was a difficult set for the Lakers. Off the bat they were trailing by 5 points which only grew as the game went on.

All throughout the men never gave up, showing tenacity through their continued speed and strength. The match ended 25-15 for York.

This brought the well fought game to an end in favor of York.

Cam Branch led the Lakers attack with 11 points, Steve Wood had 10.5 and Warren Taylor added 9.5 in tonight's match.

The Lakers will play next in Kingston against Queens, next Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against RMC on Sunday, Nov. 5.
