A tough weekend saw the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team take away positives, but unfortunately those positives didn't come in the form of a win.
The Lakers dropped a pair of games on the road, losing 2-1 to the Brock Badgers Friday night, before being doubled up, 8-4 by the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon.
On Friday, Nipissing played an extremely strong game and without question deserved a better fate, but a Badgers' goal in the third period proved to be too much for the Lakers.
After Brock went up 1-0 in the second period after a scoreless first period,
Joel Herbert found the back of the net to tie things up.
Deverick Ottereyes drew the lone assist on the goal.
Tied 1-1 after 40 minutes, Brock would score the game-winner in the third period to ruin an impressive Lakers effort and send them to a loss.
Domenic Graham was tagged with the loss, despite turning aside 29 of 31 shots.
Nipissing held a 34-31 shot advantage through 60 minutes.
Saturday, it was the second period that hurt the Lakers against a talented Guelph team.
Guelph led 2-1 after one period of play, with
Danny Desrochers finding the back of the net in the opening frame, set up by
Colin Campbell and Ottereyes on the power play.
Guelph then scored five goals in the second period, with the lone Nipissing goal coming off the stick of
Erik Robichaud.
Matt Donnelly and
Brett Hargrave picked up assists on the goal.
After it was all said and done, Guelph led 7-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Nipissing outscored Guelph 2-1 in the third, but it wasn't enough.
Hargrave and
Brody Morris each scored, with Ottereyes picking up another assist, along with Donnelly,
Guillaume Naud and Hargrave.
The Lakers will look to rebound and close out the semester strong when they hit the road this weekend, facing Concordia and McGill in Quebec.
