WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS IMPRESS IN FIRST WIN OF THE YEAR

That's a perfect way to cap off the opening weekend of play for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team.

The Lakers were looking to redeem themselves after last night's tough loss to Laurier and they did just that, coming up with a big 74-61 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at home.

The first quarter started off strong for Nipissing. Nipissing had a strong start and a great opening quarter, ending the first quarter up 25-12 for.

The Lakers managed to keep a lead as the minutes ticked down to half.

Up 33-30 after 20 minutes of play, the Lakers put the game away in the third quarter.

From there, the Lakers took off, draining shot after shot.

The crowd was pumped as Nipissing's lead continuously grew, ending the quarter up 54-35.

As both teams came on the court for the final quarter, it was clear the Warriors weren't going out without a fight.

Energy emanating from both teams, Nipissing clearly had more in them as they continued to sink three-pointer after three-pointer.

The game finished 74-61 in favour of the Lakers, as they grab win number one of the young season.

Nipissing's top scorers were Heidi Smith with 17, Marla Corney had 16 and Maeve Therriault added 12.

The next two weekends the Lakers play away, first against Lakehead then, against Brock and Guelph.

Nipissing returns to home court Nov. 24 to take on Algoma.
