Opponent – Saturday vs. York Lions
Breakdown
The Lakers showed their grit and determination Sunday, as they not only bounced back from a tough loss Sunday, but also came back from being down 2-1 to beat Guelph in five sets.
The win was big for a number of reasons; it ended a mini three match losing streak, it got them back to .500 and has them in third place, tied with York and two points ahead of Queens.
With just the final month left on the schedule, wins will be pivotal for the Lakers and none bigger than this weekend, when they face the Lions, the team they are battling with for third place in the East Division.
York defeated Nipissing earlier in the season, but both teams will note that it was a long time ago and shouldn't matter much heading into Saturday's matchup.
Keys to Victory
The Lakers are a perfect 2-0 in single-match weekends, defeating Lakehead and Trent in their other matchups. The keys there were strong starts and setting the tone early on.
Against Lakehead, Nipissing won the first set 25-22 and while they were tested, it gave them the boost they need to take care of business the rest of the way.
Versus Trent, it was a similar story, winning 25-11 on their way to a sweep.
A first set victory would be a huge building block for the Lakers, as they attempt to take sole possession of third in the division.
Players to Watch
Erika Lapierre – Although she ranks third on the team with 2.5 points per set, she had a very strong weekend and has really come on lately, giving the Lakers another weapon.
Along with
Shayla Kessler and
Tracy Hammerton on the outside, the potential for a strong offence is there, if the Lakers' guns are firing like they can.
Stephanie Armstrong – Armstrong has been strong and pretty consistent all year and being able to spread out the offence will be huge.
Using the outside hitters, along with a change of pace on a middle attack can keep the Lions off balance and may give the Lakers the advantage.
