While they will fall short of the playoffs, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team surely hasn't quit.
The Lakers took the division's top team to a shootout Friday night, before falling short by a final of 2-1, as the McGill Redmen escaped North Bay with two points.
In their past four games, the Lakers have taken three top teams right to the wire, defeating UQTR and York in shootouts, while falling short to the division leading Redmen, showing a lot of heart along the way.
Things were tight the entire game as the Lakers and Redmen played 42 minutes of scoreless hockey before
Brock Morrison gave Nipissing the lead.
The power play marker came early in the third, with assists going to
Erik Robichaud and
Dylan Staples.
The lead lasted over 16 minutes and it was with less than two minutes to go when the Redmen tied things up to send it to overtime.
Two overtime periods solved nothing and it was the shootout that gave the advantage to McGill, as they scored twice, with Nipissing finding the net just once in the penalty shot competition.
Final shots favoured McGill 47-34, as
Domenic Graham was solid in the Lakers net, making 46 saves, along with two more in the shootout.
Nipissing will wrap up their season Saturday when they host the Ottawa Gee Gees.
Looking for a positive finish to the year, Nipissing will look to play spoiler against the playoff bound Gee Gees.
Puck drop is set for 7:15 at Memorial Gardens.
