While it goes down as one win and one loss, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team won't be thrilled with the way their trip to Kingston ended.
The Lakers took care of business Saturday, defeating the RMC 3-0 Paladins, but fell on Sunday to one of the teams they're battling for a post-season berth, the Queens Gaels.
The 3-0 loss to Queens puts the Lakers in a tough spot to make the playoffs, despite currently having a solid year - their best ever in the OUA.
Saturday, Nipissing picked up the sweep, winning 25-17, 25-17 and 25-18 over the always-scrappy Paladins.
Tracy Hammerton had a strong match, picking up 10 kills to lead the Lakers, while
Erika Lapierre chipped in with six and
Victoria Willars added five.
Nipissing used a balanced attack and a steady effort to earn the victory.
Sunday wasn't as positive for the Lakers, as they lost in straight sets, 26-24, 25-18 and 25-13.
In a key matchup that would push one team that much closer to the post-season, it was the Gaels who came out on top.
Shayla Kessler and Lapierre each had seven kills in the match, while Hammerton added another six to her total.
Nipissing is now in a must-win situation, sitting tied for fourth place, the final play off spot, but is not in a favourable position when it comes to the tie-breaker, should they finished tied with York or Queens.
The Lakers close out the regular season with matches versus Western Friday night and Windsor Saturday evening.
On top of needing victories, the Lakers will be doing some scoreboard watching as both York and Queens close out the season schedule as well.
Both matches are set to begin at 6pm.
