The Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team capped off their best season in the OUA the way they started it – with a 3-0 win.
The Lakers were able to send their two senior players away with a big win, as they took care of business versus the Windsor Lancers, sweeping them Saturday night on home court.
The win gives Nipissing their ninth of the season, a new best for the program in their four seasons in the OUA and while they fell short of the playoffs, the team can hold their heads high, knowing they were competitive every set of every match, all season.
In Saturday's win, the Lakers faced some adversity early on, trailing 7-2 in the first set, but they were able to turn that around quite quickly and had the game even at 14-14.
From there, the teams continued to trade points, but Nipissing was able to outscore the Lancers 10-8 down the stretch to set the tone and take the first set 25-22.
The second set was even right from the beginning as the team were going point for point.
With the score 18-18, Nipissing once again did enough to separate themselves, using a 7-5 advantage to close out the set and take control of the match.
In the third, the Lakers didn't fool around putting the match away.
The Lakers led 16-11 at the technical time out and finished things off in style, cruising to the win thanks to a late 9-6 push.
Tracy Hammerton had a big game in the finale, picking up 14 kills, while
Shayla Kessler added 11 in the victory.
Christina Caruso was her energetic self, leading the team with 13 digs and adding four assists, as she wraps up her career with the Lakers.
Nipissing had an exciting season and will keep working throughout the off-season to come back ready to make some noise in 2017-18.
