LACROSSE: LAKERS FINISH A TOUGH ROAD TRIP AT 1-2

While they managed just the one win in three games, there are positives to take from the Nipissing Lacrosse team's opening weekend.

The Lakers finished with a 1-2 record, defeating Ottawa 16-15 Friday night to kick off the season, before dropping a pair to McGill – 20-6 and 17-11 – in Montreal.

It was a tough start to the season in terms of scheduling, but Nipissing did manage to earn points on the road and will now returning home for games this weekend.

On Friday, an even affair saw the Lakers use a strong fourth quarter and six goals to pull out the win.

The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime after trading 5-2 quarters.

After trailing by one heading into the final quarter, Nipissing managed to pull out the victory scoring four of the last five goals and upend the Gee Gees.

Nick Chaykowsky led the way with five goals, Scott Dominey had 4, Sean Menzie and Alex DeGagne each buried two and Tanner Poole, Tyler Goodchild and Kieran Peltier chipped in with one each.

Joseph McMahon earned the victory in net.

Saturday's game was a different story as the Lakers found themselves behind early.

McGill grabbed a 7-2 lead after one quarter of play and really blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring Nipissing 7-0 on their way to a 20-6 win.

The Lakers fought back in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to dig themselves out of a large hole.

Chaykowsky and Dominey added two more goals each, while DeGagne and Jack Drinkwalter picked up singles.

On Sunday, it was again a slow start that doomed the Lakers, as they trailed 6-3 after one and 9-5 at halftime.

And once again, it was a tough third quarter that finally sealed the results as McGill scored six times to grab a commanding lead.

Nipissing fought back, outscoring the Redmen 5-2 in the final frame, but it was too little and too late at that point as they dropped their second of the weekend.

Dominey had a monster game, scoring five goals, Chaykowsky added another three, Menzie potted two and Drinkwalter added another to round out the scoring for the Lakers.

Nipissing now returns to North Bay for their first two home games of the year, hosting the Bishops Gaiters Saturday and Sunday.

Game times are 6pm Saturday evening and 9am Sunday morning.
