With just one game this past weekend, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team couldn't take advantage and earn any points, despite a solid effort and a lot of chances.
The Lakers fell 1-0 to their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs in the first leg of both the Riley Gallo Cup and 705 Challenge Cup.
Laurentian used a goal in the 84 th minute to secure the victory and the full three points, despite Nipissing outshooting the Vees 9-6 through 90 minutes of play.
Cameron Brodie led the Lakers with three shots, while
Andrea Young had two, but neither players, nor their teammates, could find the back of the net.
Mykaela Volpe was steady in net, making five saves, but is tagged with the loss.
After five straight on the road, the Lakers will finally come home and play four of their next five in North Bay, beginning this weekend with a pair, including the 2017 home opener Saturday afternoon.
Nipissing hosts their home opener Saturday against Queens at noon and will wrap up the weekend Sunday versus RMC.
Both games will be played at St. Joseph-Scollard Hall field.
