While the weekend ended in a split in Kingston, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team did put an exclamation mark on their first win of the season.
The Lakers picked up a convincing 5-0 victory over the RMC Paladins Saturday afternoon, before dropping a tough contest Sunday, 4-2, to the Queens Gaels.
After a tie and a loss in their opening weekend, the Lakers have now earned points in two of their first four games, posting a 1-2-1 record.
Nipissing wasted no time finding the back of the net Saturday, as
Taylor Barkley put the Lakers up 1-0 just a minute into game.
Andrea Young extended the lead just five minutes later, putting home her second her second of the season.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, the Lakers opened things up in the second half, firing home three more goals which began with
Madison Logan's first of the year.
Sarah Schouten made it 4-0 and finally,
Erika Brennan capped off the scoring in injury time, making the final 5-0 Lakers.
Mykaela Volpe and
Hana Gazdik shared the shutout, each playing 45 minutes in the win.
Sunday, it was another strong start for the Lakers, unfortunately it didn't last like Saturday's game.
Young scored her second in as many days, putting Nipissing up 1-0 seven minutes into the game.
Queens replied at the 14-minute mark to tie things up before Young scored her third goal of the weekend to give the visitors the lead once again.
Young now has four goals in four games so far this season, putting her in second in the OUA in goals after the second weekend of action.
The lead wouldn't last, however, as the Gaels scored early in the second half to tie it, then tallied twice before the hour mark to take a 4-2 lead.
They held on from there, stealing two points from the Lakers with their late push.
Nipissing will now focus their attention on Game 1 of the 705 Challenge Cup, preparing to head to Sudbury for a showdown with Laurentian Saturday afternoon.
Kickoff is set for Noon at Laurentian Field.
