WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: EARLY DEFICIT TOO MUCH FOR LAKERS TO OVERCOME

The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team continued their homestand, this time hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues.

While the score doesn't reflect the type of contest it was, the Lakers came up short, losing 71-53 to the Varsity Blues.

Toronto managed to get hands on the jump ball first and controlled the early part of the game, but Nipissing came right back as the two teams were battling for every possession.

The first quarter ended with a score of 13-9 in favour of Toronto, but things were pretty even overall.

As the game continued, the energy on Nipissing's bench filled the gym. Despite falling behind, the Lakers kept cheering, sprinting and moving the ball well, but were unable to gain any real ground on Toronto. At halftime, the Lakers found themselves down 32-22.

Nipissing was able to answer almost every Blues basket, but did struggle to close the gap.

In the third quarter, Toronto's lead only increased by two points, putting the gap at 12, 48-36 after 30 minutes of play.

In the final quarter of the game, Nipissing gave it all they had.

Unfortunately they just couldn't overcome the Blues, who managed to shut down any offensive attack the Lakers had.

Toronto ended up taking the victory on the road, upending Nipissing, 71-53.

Marla Corney led the Lakers attack with 13 points and Jamie Soffer added 10 in tonight's matchup versus Toronto.

The Lakers return to action Saturday night when they host the Ryerson Rams at 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.
