The learning experience continued for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team this weekend, as they faced two of the OUA's top teams.
Friday night, the Lakers held their own against a strong Ottawa Gee Gees team, losing 62-50 before falling 100-44 to the league's top team, the Carleton Ravens.
The Lakers held their own with Ottawa Friday, trailing by just two after the first quarter and by seven at halftime.
The deficit never got out of reach, but became a little tougher to climb back from after the third quarter, when the Lakers were outscored by six and trailed 54-41 after 30 minutes of play.
A low scoring fourth quarter finished things up, with the Gee Gees hanging on for the win over Nipissing.
Alexe Galipeau-Wilson led the way with 12 points,
Heidi Smith added nine points and
Marla Corney chipped in with seven against Ottawa.
On Saturday, the Ravens were quick out of the gates and kept the Lakers on their heels all night, controlling the play throughout.
The Lakers trailed 27-11 after one and 55-21 at halftime and while they improved in the second half, the deficit was too much to overcome.
Carleton outscored Nipissing 45-23 in the final 20 minutes of the game to cruise to the win.
Kylea Galipeau-Wilson led the attack with seven points, while Smith scored six and Corney,
Nakissa Koomalsingh,
Natalie Martinez and
Maria Walsh all added five.
Nipissing is back in action this weekend when they face York and Queens on the road.
