In a battle for northern supremacy, both the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team and the Laurentian Voyageurs left it all on the court.
The teams engaged in a real competitive and entertaining matchup Wednesday night at the RJS Athletic Centre, with the Vees edging the Lakers 69-64.
The win gives the Voyageurs an overall edge in the 705 Challenge Cup, as they now lead 5-4 over Nipissing.
The teams were separated by just a few points the entire game, with the Vees jumping out to a 21-17 lead after the first quarter, despite a late push by Nipissing, as they scored the final four points of the quarter.
Nipissing managed to win the second quarter and pull the game a point closer, trailing Laurentian 36-33 at halftime.
The Lakers grabbed a lead in the third and the teams headed to the final quarter all tied up, 51-51.
Nipissing held a 64-63 lead late in the fourth quarter, but were unable to lock the game down as Laurentian scored six straight points to steal the victory away from the Lakers.
Marla Corney had a big game, scoring 23 points and
Nakissa Koomalsingh and
Kylea Galipeau-Wilson each added 10 in Wednesday's game.
The two teams are back at it Saturday afternoon in Sudbury, with tip-off set for 2pm.
