Box Score 2 While their spot in the post-season was locked in and their position was set, the final weekend was just a formality for the Nipissing Lakers men's soccer team.
The Lakers finished the season with losses to the Toronto Varsity Blues and the Ryerson Rams, but will compete in the OUA playoffs beginning Wednesday on the road.
On Saturday, a quick start wasn't enough for the Lakers, as they fell 4-2 to Toronto.
Cody Vaillancourt scored just a minute into the game, but three straight Blues' goals put Nipissing behind the eight-ball the rest of the way.
At halftime, the Lakers trailed 2-1 and Toronto extended their lead early in the second half.
Darius Tignanelli got one back in the 61st minute to pull Nipissing within one, but another Toronto goal just under 10 minutes later sealed the deal.
Achuthan Shanmugaratnam made four saves in the loss, while Nipissing put for shots on the Toronto goal.
In their final game of the regular season, the Lakers once again stayed close to a nationally ranked team, but dropped a tough one goal decision.
Jonathan Mulimbi scored the lone goal for the Lakers, who trailed 2-0 before replying with just minutes left in the game.
Achuthan Shanmugaratnam made his second straight start and finished with three in the game.
The Lakers had four shots on the Rams goal.
Up next, the Lakers will hit the road to face the Queens Gaels in Round 1 of the OUA playoffs.
The game is set for Wednesday at 7pm in Kingston
