With the first game of the season in the rear-view mirror, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team is ready to make some noise.
Starting a week early due to scheduling conflicts, the Lakers came up short, losing to Laurentian, but they have the chance to bounce back quickly this week at home.
The Lakers will host the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday night at 6pm, aiming for win number one.
The team has speed, skill and depth to compete at the OUA level and they will look climb the standings this season.
A few players in their fourth year will be relied on not only on the court, but also off of it to lead the way and continue with the program's development.
Jamie Soffer,
Devanee Dewey,
Michaela Branker and
Alexe Galipeau-Wilson are the backbone of the team and have been through the rigours of a couple years at this level.
That experience will go a long way in leading the team.
Teaming up with a few new faces, as well as players entering their second and third years should provide a good balance for the team.
A busy pre-season has allowed the team to get their feet wet, playing a number of different teams and seeing a number of different styles on the court.
They have also added some key recruits who will look to jump into the lineup and make an impact.
All in all, the team has the potential to compete for a playoff spot, but know the climb won't be an easy one.
It will take a complete effort from the entire roster all season, but that's nothing the team isn't capable of. They just need to make it happen.
The challenge ahead of them is one they're looking forward to and one they're ready for and it will continue Friday.
