Box Score 2 A pair of overtime wins made the road trip longer, but it was worth it for the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team.
The Lakers picked up two wins this weekend, defeating the York Lions 3-2 in a shootout Saturday and edging Guelph 2-1 in overtime Sunday to stay undefeated on the road so far this season.
The weekend started with a victory over York, as Nipissing scored twice in the second period and three times in the shootout to claim the extra point.
After trailing 1-0 after one, the Lakers scored twice in the second period.
Sam Strassburger tied the game on the power play and
Jade Gauthier gave Nipissing the lead just 20 seconds later.
Strassburger and Gauthier also assisted on each other's goal, while
Taylor McManus and
Myriam Latraverse picked up the other assists.
York would tie the game before the end of the middle frame and with no scoring in the third or overtime, the game went to a shootout.
Both teams scored on their first two shots, but from there
Cassie Roberge would shut the door and
Maria Dominico ended the game on the fifth shot.
Roberge finished with 32 saves in the win.
On Sunday, after a scoreless first period, the team each found the back of the net in the middle frame.
After Guelph scored to take the lead,
Zosia Davis scored the first of her two on the game to tie things up.
Katelyn Heppner drew the lone assist on the goal.
Skip ahead to overtime, it took Davis just seven seconds to send the Lakers home with a victory, as she buried the winner.
Jetta Derenoski and
Kaley Tienhaara picked up assists on Davis' second of the game.
Danika Ranger made 27 saves for the win and to give Nipissing a 2-0 weekend.
Nipissing returns home for a pair of games this weekend - Friday at 11am versus Queens and Saturday at 7:30pm against UOIT.
Both games are at Memorial Gardens.
