WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS STILL SEARCHING FOR FIRST WIN

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Staying competitive, staying close and playing hard has never been an issue for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team.

Staying consistent for all 40 minutes in every game seems to be the issue and was last weekend, as they played well for most of both games on the road, but came up short, losing twice.

Friday, they lost 75-65 to the Guelph Gryphons despite leading at the half and Sunday, Nipissing fell to Algoma 74-59.

In Friday night's contest, Nipissing started strong and led by four after the first quarter and extended their lead to 13 at halftime, holding a 36-23 advantage over the Gryphons.

It was a different game in the second half, as Guelph stormed back and scored 52 points, erasing the Lakers lead and picking up the 10 point win, as Nipissing was unable to clamp down.

They did manage 29 points of their own, but it wasn't enough in the end.

Angeline Campbell led the way with a big game, scoring 21 points, Michaela Branker had 14, while Alexe Galipeau-Wilson scored 12 points.

In the second game of the weekend, Nipissing stayed close to Algoma throughout the 40 minutes of play, but were unable to take control.

At halftime of the game, Nipissing trailed by just six – 34-28 and actually gained ground in the third quarter.

In the fourth, within striking distance, the Lakers weren't able to climb back for their deficit and allowed Algoma to pull away and walk away with the victory.

Jamie Soffer had a strong game, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds, Maria Walsh and Michaela Branker each added 11 and Angeline Campbell chipped in with 10.

Nipissing remains on the road for a pair of games this weekend, taking on Waterloo Friday and Laurier Saturday night.
