It was a valuable point, but two would have been better.
The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team came up short Saturday night, losing 4-3 in overtime to the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Lakers held leads of 2-0 and 3-1, but were unable to hang on and only earned a single point as they head towards the end of the season.
Steve Deeg and
Dylan Staples put Nipissing up 2-0 in the first period, both scoring on pretty plays and nice finishes.
Deeg was set up by
Joel Herbert and
Brock Morrison and made a nice move to his backhand to ripple the twice.
Staples broke down the wing and rifled his shot upstairs to put Nipissing up a pair.
Deverick Ottereyes drew the helper on the second goal of the game.
The lone goal in the second period came from Laurentian, who poured on pressure late in the period and scored with just over a minute left on the goal.
The Lakers would regain their two goal cushion as
Sam Gleason fired a shot from the point that made its way through traffic on the power play.
Ottereyes picked up his second assist on the night, while
Erik Robichaud drew the other assist.
Laurentian replied just over two minutes later to make it 3-2 and two minutes after that, tied the game at three.
After chances at both ends and some exciting rushes, Laurentian was able to capitalize on a chance with just 12 seconds left on the clock to escape with the extra point.
Brent Moran was good in net, finishing with 38 saves, with the shotclock favouring Laurentian by a final of 42-35.
Nipissing has just two games left on their schedule, Friday at home to RMC and Saturday in Kingston against Queens.
