The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team didn't exactly ease into their new home this past weekend.
After starting their season on the road, the Lakers returned home to play their first regular season game on the new turf field at Nipissing University and welcomed to perennial powerhouses to the city.
Saturday, the Lakers used a quick start and a solid second half to pick up a big victory over the Bishop's Gaiters.
Nipissing led 4-1 after one, but found themselves tied 7-7 at halftime.
In the second, the Lakers scored seven times to edge the Gaiters 14-11.
Tanner Poole led the way with two goals and eight points,
Scott Dominey,
Tyler Goodchild and
Will Craig all scored hat-tricks,
Riley Sloan added a pair and
Sam Rooney rounded out the scoring with a goal.
Looking to build off of the win, the Lakers faced an undefeated Trent Excalibur team.
Trent led 3-1 after one and 6-4 at halftime, but poured it on late in the game, scoring 11 times in the second half.
That strong finish included a 6-1 advantage over the Lakers in the fourth quarter, as Nipissing settled for a weekend split, losing 17-9.
Dominey had four goals, Rooney added a pair and Pool, Sloan and Craig all chipped in with singles in a losing effort.
Nipissingnow sits at 2-3 on the season, with two more home games coming up.
They'll host Queens Saturday at 2pm and Ottawa Sunday at 3pm – both at the Nipissing Field.
