WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS WINNING STREAK HALTED BY GEE GEES

Looking to extend their winning streak and hoping to make it four wins in their past five games, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team hosted the Ottawa Gee Gees Friday night.

Despite an improved defensive effort in the second half, the Lakers came up short, losing 78-47 to the division-leading Gee Gees.

Nipissing didn't get off to the start they had hoped and although they put up 17 points in the opening quarter, they allowed 30 and trailed by 13 after 10 minutes of play.

Ottawa was able to add to their lead in the second, heating up and posting another 20 points.

Nipissing managed to score 11, but found themselves down 50-28 at the halftime break.

In the third, both teams played strong defensively combining for just 21 points, with Ottawa extending their lead by just one point.

With the Lakers trailing 61-38 after three, Ottawa sealed the win by adding 17 points and pushed their lead to 31 in the end, picking up a victory over Nipissing.

Angeline Campbell led the Lakers attack with 23 points, Jamie Soffer added eight and Alexe Galipeau-Wilson had seven in tonight's game.

Nipissing is back in action Saturday night when they host Carleton at 6pm at the RJS Athletic Centre.
