Box Score 1 It has been a bit of an up and down 2019 for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team, but things are positive overall.
Despite a pair of losses on the weekend, the Lakers battled against two tough teams, losing 70-48 to the Toronto Varsity Blues and 85-48 to the powerful Ryerson Rams.
On Friday, the middle of the game hurt Nipissing, as they hung in there for the majority of the 40 minutes, but struggled in the second and third quarters.
After trailing 17-14 after one, the Lakers found themselves down 35-24 at halftime.
That deficit went from 11 to 18 after 30 minutes of play, with Toronto leading 59-31 after three quarters.
The teams combined for 38 points in the fourth quarter, but it was Toronto who would cruise to the win.
Jamie Soffer had a big game, posting 16 points, while
Angeline Campbell added 14.
On Saturday, in the second game of the weekend, the Lakers faced one of the country's top teams.
Nipissing put in a consistent effort, but trailed by 11 after one and were down 43-20 at halftime.
Ryerson continued to cruise in the second half on their way to a victory, outscoring Nipissing 16-14 in the third and 26-14 in the fourth.
Campbell put up another 15 points in the loss, while
Vanessa Willis added 10.
Nipissing remains on the road for two more games, facing Queens and York next weekend.
