Box Score 2 Two tight contests, two solid efforts, but it didn't translate into success for the Nipissing Lakers men's basketball team.
The Lakers battled both nights, but came up short, losing 84-75 in overtime to the Queens Gaels and 77-57 to the York Lions on the road.
On Friday, the Lakers and Gaels wet back and forth through all five quarters of play.
Nipissing got off to a good start, leading 15-14 after the first.
Queens fought back and led 32-27 at the half.
A very strong third quarter put Nipissing back in front, as they outscored the Gaels 21-11 to take a 48-43 lead into the fourth.
Queens rebounded nicely and edged the Lakers 23-18 to send the game into overtime.
In the extra quarter, the Gaels caught fire and put up 18 points and picked up the victory.
Justin Hill had 25 points,
Marcus Lewis had 13 points and 16 rebounds and
Jordan Roberts added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Saturday against York, the Lakers offence hit a bit of a snag early in the game.
York came out strong and led 17-8 after one, but Nipissing did improve in the second.
At halftime, the Lakers trailed 36-26.
York extended their lead in a big way in the third quarter, outscoring the Lakers 27-9 to head into the fourth with a commanding 63-35 advantage.
The Lakers pushed in the fourth, besting York 22-14, but it wasn't enough to make a comeback.
Will Tran led the way with 16 points while
Marvin Ngonadi had 10.
Nipissing returns home to face Laurentian Friday night.
