WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS BOUNCE QUEENS TO SWEEP THE WEEKEND

For the first time in the program's history, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team has won back-to-back games.

The Lakers, after defeating York Friday night, topped the Queens Gaels 61-48 Saturday night to make it a perfect weekend and start 2019 off with two straight winnings, improving to 3-9 on the season.

Nipissing had a strong weekend in all aspects of the game, including erasing a few deficits throughout the two games.

Despite trailing 22-16 after the opening quarter, the Lakers came back strong in the second, doubling up on Queens before the half.

Thanks to a solid second, Nipissing led 32-30 at the break.

They extended their lead in the third quarter, posting 15 points and going ahead by five after 30 minutes of play.

Up 47-42, Nipissing put the game away – even though it was tight till the end – padding their advantage and limiting Queens to just six points.

Thanks to that impressive defensive effort, along with scoring 14 points of their own, Nipissing came away with the 13 point triumph.

Angeline Campbell led the way scoring 24 points, Michaela Branker had 16 and Jamie Soffer added eight points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Nipissing hosts Ottawa and Carleton next weekend at the RJS Athletic Centre.
