There was no shortage of excitement and tense moments Wednesday night at Nipissing Field as the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team and the Ryerson Rams did battle.
The two teams played a classic OUA Playoff game, with the deciding goal coming in a shootout, as the Rams came away with a 1-0 victory, advancing to the second round.
Despite the lack of goals through 90 minutes, both teams put on pressure, had great chances and played some very good soccer.
The Rams controlled the first half, outshooting Nipissing 3-1 and out-chancing them as well.
In the second half and later stages of the game, it was all Lakers as they pressured the ball, put a lot of stress on the Rams defence and came within inches a number of times to earning the victory.
After 120 of exciting minutes play, the shots read 9-5 in favour of Ryerson.
Up front, the Lakers had the advantage, as they were able to generate offence.
The teams played a little more tentative in the extra time, but both pushed for the victory.
Mykaela Volpe was outstanding through the 120 minutes making some highlight reel saves as well as one gigantic save in the shootout.
Unfortunately, the Rams were a little better from the penalty spot and came away with the win.
In the end, Nipissing's outstanding season came to a heart-breaking end, but the effort was impressive throughout the entire year.
