It's safe to say the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team is right there with any and all the teams in the OUA.
Unfortunately, they haven't been able to see the results in the win-loss column at the end of the day, despite playing solid volleyball throughout the early part of this season.
The Lakers came up short Sunday against the Brock Badgers at the Surtees Athletic Centre, losing 3-0, but with all three sets being closely contested.
Brock was strong right off the bat, jumping out to a 10-6 lead and pushing their advantage to 16-11 at the technical timeout in the opening set.
Nipissing fought back and trailed by just one, 18-17, late in the set.
A second late push by the Lakers saw them get within one, but Brock closed things out to claim the set 25-223.
A slow start in the first didn't stop Nipissing from battling back and set just one behind Brock, 11-10 early on.
Brock padded their lead to 16-13 at the technical timeout in the second set and led 22-17 late.
Once again, a comeback came up just short, as the Lakers fell 25-22 to go down 2-0.
At the technical timeout in the third set, Nipissing was able to hold the lead, 16-15, over Brock.
The Badgers then went on a 6-1 run to move ahead 21-17, as they looked to close the match out.
The teams traded points down the stretch, but it was Brock who managed to keep a cushion and claim the set win, 25-21.
Three hard-fought sets saw the Badgers remain a perfect 6-0, while Nipissing sits at 2-4.
Shayla Kessler led the way with 12 kills and 13 points,
Megan Winter had six kills, while
Shannon Lebreux and
Madison Murphy each added five kills in today's contest.
Nipissing hits the road and heads to Thunder Bay to take on Lakehead next Saturday night.
