The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team suffered a heart-breaking loss Sunday afternoon on the road.
The Lakers dropped a tight contest, losing 71-69 to the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury, as the Vees scored with 27 seconds left to claim the win.
The Lakers started slowly and struggled on offence, trailing 16-10 after the opening quarter.
They exploded in the second, however, posting 22 points to even the game and tie things up prior to the halftime break.
Tied 32-32 entering the third quarter, the Lakers once again put up a big number, scoring 22 more points and led 54-49 after 30 minutes of play.
Laurentian fought back in the fourth, outscoring the Lakers by seven, including the last second baskets, to escape with the victory.
Maria Walsh had a strong game, posting 16 points,
Natalie Martinez scored 15 and
Nicole Budd added 12 in the contest.
Nipissing is back in action at Laurier Friday night and at Waterloo Saturday.
