The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team remained perfect after earning their fifth win of the season Saturday night at Memorial Gardens.

Coming off a win over Windsor Friday morning, the Lakers made it a perfect weekend thanks to a 3-1 win over the visiting Western Mustangs.

Nipissing began the game on fire, scoring three times in the first period despite both teams firing eight shots on goal.

Maria Dominico kicked things off with her third of the game, set up by Brianna Gaffney and Madison Laberge.

Melanie Young extended the lead to two goals as she scored her second of the season less than five minutes later.

Katelyn Heppner and Maggie McKee earned helpers on the second goal of the game.

McKee then buried her first of the year and second point of the game at the 12:40 mark of the opening period to put Nipissing up by three.

Malory Dominico and Young, who also had two points in the period, picked up assists on the goal.

In the middle frame, the lone goal came from the Western Mustangs, as they cut into the Nipissing lead.

After 40 minutes, the Lakers held a 3-1 lead.

The pace was high in the third, but nothing in the way of offensive changed between the two teams as the Lakers held defensively and maintained their two goal lead.

In the end, Nipissing stays perfect thanks to a 3-1 victory.

Danika Ranger finished with 21 saves, including a penalty shot stop against North Bay, ON native Hannah Irwin.

The final shots read 23-22 in favour of Nipissing.

Nipissing is back on the ice next weekend when they take on the Brock Badgers Saturday and Guelph Gryphons Sunday, both on the road.
