Box Score It wasn't the end of the semester the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was hoping for, but that doesn't take away from an impressive first half.
The Lakers dropped a tough 6-3 decision to the York Lions Saturday night in their lone game of the weekend.
Madison Solie,
Maria Dominico and
Brianna Gaffney both had multi-point games, but it wasn't enough for the Lakers, who finished with the calendar year with a 8-4-0 record.
After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for nine goals in 40 minutes of play.
York scored twice in the second period, just 34 seconds apart, to go up 2-0.
Dominico cut the Lakers deficit at the 14:14 minute mark of the period, with Gaffney and Solie drawing assists on the Nipissing tally.
In the third, York added to their lead early in the period, but just minutes later the Lakers responded.
Marilyn Fortin scored a power play goal to once again get the Lakers within one goal.
Gaffney and captain
Jetta Derenoski picked up helpers on the goal.
Once again, the Lions extended their lead to two goals in what turned out to be a six-goal third frame.
Solie scored with six minutes left in the third period to set up a thrilling finish as the Lakers would pull their goalie shortly after.
Solie's goal made the score 4-3 in favour of York.
The Dominico sisters had assists on the final Nipissing goal of the game.
Two empty-net goals sealed the game for the Lions as they came away with the victory.
Danika Ranger took the loss in net, finishing with 23 saves, while Nipissing had 24 shots on the Lions goal.
Nipissing is off for the rest of the year and will be back in action in January when they hit the road to take on Ontario Tech and Queens.
